What is your favorite fruit?
Kiwi berries, nature’s candy!
What is your biggest pet peeve?
The exploitation of animals.
What is your favorite musical and why?
Hard to choose, but my favorite live musical performance was seeing Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Theater Theater in 2002.
*Bonus question:
If you were to write a musical, what would it be about?
I’m working on a musical called She, a 33 minute mash-up of two underappreciated releases from 1984: Post-apocalyptic goddess film, She, by Avi Nesher and “Breakdance”, an album by Larry Wolff and the Streetbeaters.

Tai Carmen

What bands / projects are you involved in?
I’m the author of a book of poems, POLLEN, published by Finishing Line Press. I also write a top-ranking blog, inquiring into the mysteries of existence & offering inspiration for the modern dreamer ~ Parallax Journal: Exploring the Architecture of Reality. Additionally, I’m the frontwoman for a band called Sugar in Wartime ~ we have one album out, but we’ve been on hiatus. Hopefully 2014 will see our return to the stage! Details at www.taicarmen.com
What is your favorite fruit?
Pomegranates. They’re so poetic & mythical. It feels like eating rubies.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Time.
What is your favorite musical and why?
The Sound of Music. Its scope is so grand— a love story that also explores the zeitgeist of a complex era in history through the lens of a seeker-dreamer, whose compass is her heart; all supported by the timeless message that love & the arts will always transcend bitterness & destruction.
*Bonus question:
If you were to write a musical, what would it be about?
Probably something allegorical, involving time travel.

What bands / projects are you involved in?
Currently, the only band I’m playing with is Fault Lines, but I’m thinking about starting to record songs on my own that won’t really work for the band.
What is your favorite fruit?
Granny Smith apples are definitely my jam. Mostly because they like to be eaten with cheese.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Poor grammar & spelling. It’s a snobby pet peeve. I don’t care.
What is your favorite musical and why?
It is really hard for me to choose just one, but I think I’ve got to go with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It really left a mark on me as a child – ‘Pure Imagination’ and that terrifying rowing song were a couple of my favorites and I still get excited when I see that a random theater or café is showing it. Gene Wilder is a genius and he really nailed it with his portrayal of a half-mad, lonely but gentle man.
*Bonus question:
If you were to write a musical, what would it be about?
I can’t say exactly, but it would probably be kind of dark. I like stories where the heroes and villains aren’t cut and dry, where the characters have motivations that can be virtuous and wicked at the same time.

Burner Courage, Fake Fireplace, The Wave Collector
What is your favorite fruit?
Apples because they are so hearty, sweet, and varied! I prefer a fully intact apple to a sliced apple any day.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
People saying “I can’t ____.”
What is your favorite musical and why?
The American Astronaut because it is the weirdest I’ve seen, was made on a low budget, is shot on black and white film, and has an incredible plot and music.
*Bonus question:
If you were to write a musical, what would it be about?
I’ve thought about writing one about a strange group of mountain folk whose songs have strange and mystical powers as they echo through the hills.

Will Hattman

Will Hattman
What bands / projects are you involved in?
Months (drums), SuS (drums), Down Gown (guitar, vocals), Houswife (drums)
What is your favorite fruit?
Peach. I’ve never met a fruit I didn’t like, but eating a ripe summer peach, and feeling like your mouth can barely contain all the sweet sweeeet juice, is pretty much a holy experience.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
That thing that every techno and electro-pop song in the universe does to build tension before the big drop. You know, this thing:
SNARE   SNARE   SNARE   SNARE   SNARE   SNARE   SNARE   SNARE
SNARE SNARE SNARE SNARE SNARE SNARE SNARE SNARE
SNRSNRSNRSNRSNRSNRSNRSNR
VVVVVVVVRRRRRRRTTTTTTT
What is your favorite musical and why?
West Side Story. Decades have passed, the entire musical language of musical theater has changed, and still, the brilliance of those Bernstein-Sondheim songs has never been matched, and their style has never gotten remotely old. The tunes are incredibly daring and progressive and modern, but they’ll get stuck in your head the first time you hear them and stay there until the day you die. I honestly feel like if I were asked to name my top 20 show tunes, every song from WSS would make the list.

*Bonus question:

If you were to write a musical, what would it be about?
I’ve always been better with formal ideas than with ideas for content, so while I can’t say I have a story in mind, I’d love to write a musical about musicians, wherein the cast and pit band were one and the same group. (Shout out to Portland’s Action/Adventure Theatre here, whose Fall of the Band series played with this idea a little bit.)

John Wagner

What bands / projects are you involved in?
Orquestra Pacifico Tropical – a 10 piece cumbia band which about half the people are also involved in this rad musical! Dreckig – which means “dirty” in german. My husband and I dress up and go crazy on drums and synths.
What is your favorite fruit?
Apples all year round, but in the summer I have really come to enjoy peaches. They are so delicious and juicy around here – especially if you go pick them yourself!
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Cattitude
What is your favorite musical and why?
“Tanz der Vampire” – “Dance of the Vampires” a german musical. I saw it twice when living there and it was super fun and entertaining

What bands / projects are you involved in?
I play ukulele and sing in the band for kids, YOUR SONG MY SONG. I’m also currently working on an instant documentary theatre collaboration we’re calling Theatre Together Now. Ask me about it! I’m visiting from Berkeley and I’d love to facilitate a show with some folks who are interested while I’m here in Portland.
What is your favorite fruit?
Pomegranates are in season right now and I love them because they’re a bit of a challenge and so delicious. Open them underwater.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
I tend to have a negative reaction to poor sidewalk usage. Standing in a big group and blocking the entire sidewalk bothers me and try not to participate in it.
What is your favorite musical and why?
My favorite musical is this one – Aika & Rose- because at the time I’m writing this I haven’t been to any rehearsals only heard a few musical samples. I feel a lot of excited and honored anticipation, and that’s my favorite!
*Bonus question:
If you were to write a musical, what would it be about?
The musical I am working on is about our polluted ocean.
